Garmin launches national fishing competition
5 June 2007
The inaugural Garmin National Charterboat Fishing competition is to take place over three days, on the 27, 28 and 29th July, in Plymouth. The aim is to attract enthusiasts from all over the country and encourage families to enter the competition as an activity they can enjoy together. The competition is open to anyone over the age of 15.
Event Organiser, Malcolm Jones, is hoping to revitalise the port of Plymouth’s affinity with the sport. “Plymouth was the UK port for wreck and reef fishing in the 70’s and is the ideal home for the Garmin National Fishing Competition. We’re expecting a fantastic turnout for this year’s event and there is a mood amongst the local charter skippers to try and revitalise Plymouth and put it back on the map in the world of fishing.”
The calibre and reputation of the competition has also been endorsed by Garmin’s commitment to sponsor the event. “We needed an international affiliated sponsor to support the event and were elated when Garmin stepped forward.”
Garmin’s UK Marine specialist, Richard Thoroughgood, is looking forward to the competition. “It’s magnificent that the Garmin National Fishing Competition has evolved from such a natural home as Plymouth. As a leading provider of state-of-the-art marine products we are delighted to be supporting the event. Entrants using Garmin’s innovative technology will be in a strong position from the outset, then it’s down to individual skill and judgement for the title of National Champion.”
It is now hoped that this national competition will be embraced by the cream of the amateurs in the UK, perhaps spurred on by the chance to get a place in the record books. With recording and photographic facilities there is definitely an opportunity for record-breaking catches!
The entrance fee is £160 for all three days.
The total value of the prizes and cash is over £4000. The first prize is £1000 plus a cup. The second prize is a Garmin nüvi 670 satellite navigation system worth £370; third prize is a Garmin nüvi 310 worth £250 and fourth prize is a Garmin GPS 72 handheld. There will also be prizes for best specimen and best species.
The Garmin National Fishing competition will also embrace a chosen charity as the benefactor of this year’s fundraising activities. All profits raised will be donated to the children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent. It offers help and support to families caring for sick youngsters, during and after treatment.
Entry forms can be obtained from the organiser by phoning 07977 097690 or by email from email@example.com
