Comprehensive Wheel Marked Icom GMDSS radio solutions for SOLAS Regulated Vessels

9 June 2011

Marine electronics on board commercial vessels is heavily regulated and has to meet strict standards. For those vessels over 300 tonnes or going into GMDSS Sea Area 3, Wheel marked equipment is statutory.

GMDSS Class A VHF and MF/HF equipment are an important requirement for vessels, giving ship owners more communication options. When in a deep sea voyage it is important to have strong safeguards in place should other communication equipment fail.

Icom supplies a full VHF and MF/HF solution that meets ITU Class A DSC requirements and European MED 96/98/EC “Wheel Mark” approval for European merchant ships. The IC-GM651 VHF/DSC marine transceiver together with Icom’s IC-M801GMDSS MF/HF radio provides a full GMDSS bridge radio line-up for the commercial maritime market place.

To complete Icom’s GMDSS range, Icom produce the IC-GM1600E survival craft radio which meets “Wheel mark”, MED certification. The IC-GM1600E meets temperature, thermal shock, vibration and drop resistance (from 1m height) requirements and meets international standards for life rafts and their emergency equipment.

Ian Lockyer, Marketing Manager of Icom UK said, ‘Our Class A equipment meets strict GMDSS requirements and provides a complete GMDSS VHF communication solution as required for Commercial SOLAS regulated vessels engaging on international voyages.’
